Date Night: Sobre Mesa.

Last weekend, we went out to eat. It almost didn’t happen because of the weather but at the last minute the babysitters (aka: grandparents) got their heat + electricity back and offered (agreed?) to take the kids. Thank goodness!

We went to Sobre Mesa Kitchen & Bar which was described as coastal Mexican food. I’ll take it. 🙂 It was our first time there and we loved it!

We sat at the bar first — you know, not my favorite place because I don’t generally like bars. Mostly because I don’t drink, but also because I just hate sitting on bar stools. I don’t like when my feet dangle. But we got some drinks (coke, for me), chips, salsa and guacamole. Sean got mezcal, and some drinks with fancy names like spicy ristra.

Then later: cozumelon and Oaxacan donkey.

Once we moved to a table, and my feet were safely planted on the ground, we started with appetizers.

We got the Empanada Del Dia which Sean loved. It was described as a flaky pastry with slow-cooked meats — that’s the part I couldn’t get behind. I like to know what kind of meat I’m consuming because there are some I don’t eat. I could have asked… but didn’t. We also got the Wood-Grilled Elotes which is smoked-corn with jalapeno, garlic crema, cotija cheese and a whole bunch of other things. It’s delicious. We also got the Patatas Bravas which are potato wedges. This is where I think I was super out of my comfort zone. I don’t generally like when my food has sauce on it — but I powered through and again, the garlic aioli was so worth the risk. I’m glad I didn’t miss out. 🙂

For the salad course, we got the Roasted Jalapeno Caesar salad. How Lola would have loved this! Caesar salad WITH tortilla chips — her two favorite things. She would have been in heaven. We both said we had never had such an amazing salad before!

For the main course, Sean got the 6 Hour Beans which I didn’t partake in but he said they were the best he’s ever had. Then we shared Cochinita Pibil which was slow-roasted pork. It was wrapped in banana leaves and the idea of that weirded me out but it was so good. It came with tortillas and sides and we made our own tacos.

We finished the night off with Churros which were covered in cinnamon sugar and salted caramel — so good!

We had a lot of food left over, so we got to enjoy leftovers the next day, too! We’ll definitely return.
