Exploring Nature With Children: Seed Week.

The second week of September we talked about Seeds! It was a rainy day but that didn’t stop us! We started the morning outside collecting different nature finds. We were looking for maple leaf seeds and acorns, specifically, but turns out we don’t have those in our yard! So the girls found some other fun things and then we made nature mobiles. I tried to explain that pinecones are not in fact seeds, but Eva wouldn’t hear it. 🙂

For snack, they cut up every single fruit we had and found the seeds! Strawberry seeds proved to be the trickiest to extract!

Once we found the seeds, they did a little snacking and a little planting. I don’t think anything will actually grow but they had a great time!

We also practiced the sound /s/ for ‘seed’ with the sand tray and the Sandpaper Letter, and dot markers. That’s a tricky sound for all of us but we’ll get it!

We also did some painting! I got small terra pots that they painted and then they planted a wildflower seed mix. I’m hoping those do actually grow!

I also wrote their names in glue and they used their fine motor skills to add pumpkin seeds onto the glue!

We had some fun with felt, too. We talked about the parts of a flower: seed, stem, leaves and petals. Then I made a counting work out of felt that was supposed to model peas in a pod!

Next week, we’re learning about the autumnal equinox!
