At the beginning of June we felt exhausted by the amount of TV we had been watching. Between Netflix and Amazon Prime and Hulu and Disney+ — we really felt like we had seen all the hit series (from now, the 2000’s and even the 90s) and the thought of committing to another multi-season series was daunting! But hey, if that’s the worst problem we have in the midst of a pandemic — I’ll take it.
Anyway — we realized that we hadn’t seen a MOVIE in a REALLY long time. I’m not even sure when the last time we entered a theater was — and we never watch movies at home because in general, I prefer shows. Movies are too short for me and I become invested in characters and have to say goodbye too soon. Plus, we usually have different opinions on movies (shows, too, for that matter). Sean likes sci-fi and horror; I like drama. We both agree on comedy.
We missed a few nights and we’ve forgotten the names of some movies (shows you what we thought of them) — but here are our June picks and what we thought of them:
The Hate U Give: my favorite movie of the month! It’s a disheartening but honest parallel of what’s happening in the world right now and it was everything: heartbreaking, heartwarming, funny, serious, family drama, teen drama, world drama. (This was Sean’s #5).
Brittany Runs a Marathon: inspired me to want to run a marathon! I LOVED it. I thought it was so funny — so, so, so funny. I was cracking up so much that Eva, in my arms, woke up! (This was Sean’s #6).
Lady Bird: I can’t believe I never watched this when it came out. But it was everything I want in a movie and more! I love all things mother/daughter and the humor in this was right up my alley. (This was Sean’s #8).
Just Mercy: Yikes. Another disheartening and heartbreaking one. It’s a true story, too. This made me cry, a lot. And I had already read the book. (This was Sean’s #7).
The King of Staten Island: I’m a sucker for anything Judd Apatow does and this one doesn’t disappoint. It’s a dark comedy but I judge a movie but how quickly I pick up my phone to scroll social media. I’m not sure I looked at my phone once! (This was Sean’s #3).
We overlapped with The Hate U Give and the King of Staten Island, but coming in at his #1…
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker: Sean had seen this already but our deal was the movie had to be new to one of us! I don’t mind Star Wars movies but they are very difficult for me to follow — too many planets, and worlds and bad guys. (This was my #14).
Jumanji: In terms of re-do’s this was really well done! It was really funny! I’m glad to have seen it but don’t think I would watch it again. (This was my #10).
Joker: Oh god, I was praying for this one to end. It was way too dark for me without being funny at all. And Batman wasn’t even in it! Sean rated it at #4. (This was my #17).
These two were torture! I couldn’t wait for them to end! Literally… Bandersnatch was a “choose your own destiny” film. I googled how to be done with it!
But anyway! We’re going to continue our movie nights for a few more weeks (or until there’s a series we can’t resist!). Any movie recommendations for us?
We're nearing the end of November, but I can't forget to recap October! I'll jump…
September brought chilly mornings, lots of family time, busy schedules and birthdays!
Our littlest guy is seven months old and is a lovebug!
