Our 2024 Garden.

Do you ever just get the urge to live off the land? 🙂 It’s one of those ideas that I would love to do… but just have no idea how to be successful! But surely, a garden is a pretty good — dare I say… easy — way to start?!

I grabbed seeds (probably too many), seed starter trays, and plant name tags from Amazon. I also ordered soil… which apparently was actually plant food (kind of different!) so Sean went out into our compost and brought some garden soil inside — and the kids got to work.

We may be overly ambitious. We’ve started seeds for everything from kale to cucumbers, broccoli to carrots, squash to watermelon. We have tomatoes, peppers, peas and radishes. We have corn, lettuce, zucchini, and beets. And then we have herbs! Chives, basil, dill, oregano, thyme, sage, cilantro, parsley and lavender. Our sights are set… very high.

Now there’s good news and bad news…

The good news is that thanks to the seed starter trays with covers and grow lights, the seeds have sprouted and even thrived! The covers create a mini greenhouse system so when we forget to water them… they are okay! Plus, the covers protect the seedlings from being eaten by our cats.

The bad news is that we definitely got overly eager in the beginning of March and planted too early in the season. Now these plant babies are ready to be transplanted and the weather outside is… not ready for them. I think I even saw snow in this week’s forecast.

But the kids had so much fun choosing what they wanted to plant, digging in the soil, and they enjoy checking on them periodically to see their growth. They feel like farmers!

So now, we wait… and we’ll continue nurturing our little indoor garden and hope for warmer weather to arrive soon enough. They can’t wait to move this outside!
