5 Must-Do Summer Activities.

5 things to do every day with kids in the summertime.

In the summer, I am all about being outside, doing things close to home and doing pretty much anything “homeschool-related” that I don’t have to prep, print, cut or laminate. We’ve had a few days of “summer” already and have gotten a small taste of what summer will look like.

I love doing things that cross age spans, build up gross motor skills, support a child’s independence, offer choices and keep those little bodies moving! Here are 5 things to do with kids every day this summer.

Gardening: There are so many benefits to waking up in the morning and taking care of a garden. From watering to weeding to tasting to observation — there are endless opportunities for learning and fun!

Child-led walks: Ditch the stroller for the littlest ones and take a walk! Let them lead the way, and you! Take your time. Stop and smell the flowers. Notice the sounds around you. Watch the birds fly by. Remember: your child doesn’t want to get there, they want to walk.

Backyard fun: Water play immediately comes to mind, but there are other things to do in the yard, too! We make do with a small picnic table and a shelf of activities: kinetic sand, bubbles, chalk, nature exploration items, art supplies, a notebook and pencils. We also have our garden, play set, our bikes and scooters and some grass to run and play.

Small outings: More and more places are opening up (safely) and it feels really good to take the kids off our property! Short trips to the local library, a new playground or a hiking trail, or a nearby splash pad can help break up the day a bit. We usually do our outings mid-morning time so that we’re home before lunch and naps.

Read: Stash books all over the place! Near their beds, the main living area, the dining area, their play area, the car, the diaper bag, the stroller basket. Books are such a treat and when a child loves books and being read to, they are more likely to choose books in their free time. And when they ask you to read to them, make sure to embrace it! Even when it’s the same book for the 3rd time in a row.
