Eva is just starting to notice things around her and while she can’t quite grasp onto anything (other than my hair, of course!) I wanted to make sure she’s still surrounded by engaging and interesting items. Plus I want to be sure that she has things to grasp once she can figure it all out. Enter: Rainbow Sensory Jars.
I’ve seen a few of these DIY sensory jars on Pinterest and decided to make my own. I wanted to keep it under $25 so I tried to look for rainbow themed items that I could then separate! So far in the jars I have: beads, sequins, pom poms, ribbon, wrapper-less crayons, fabric, pasta, tissue paper, and feathers. You could continue with other small items like paper clips, cut up sponges, small little toys around the house, hair ties, bows, shredded paper, erasers, balloons — you could get super creative with this!
I found small jars in the .99 cent spot at Michaels. I really wanted something even smaller — I was thinking a small container made for Sand Art — but they didn’t have it and I was too impatient to keep store hopping. So I settled for these jars which are actually pretty decently sized for two small hands.
The jars are really lightweight (even filled) — I don’t want it to hurt should they drop on her body! I haven’t decided YET but I may glue them closed with a glue-gun to make sure they are extra safe. Not that I think Eva would open them but I do question whether Javi or Lola will become curious about such an attractive work! Plus Lola’s newest skill IS opening and closing containers!
This activity was so much fun to put together. Lola helped me with it (so the below picture is actually what it looked like while filling these jars, ha!) but it was great because she is learning the names of colors so we had a little language lesson, too!
Have you ever made any sensory jars?
