I broke out our Flisat table and put together a sensory table for the girls. Sensory tables, using sand, water, or even rice can be a fun and exciting exploration. I prefer water even though it’s messiest because I also find it the easiest to clean. Sand and rice seems to get everywhere and stays everywhere for a longer period of time!

I haven’t set up a sensory table since around Halloween. But I think if we use something all the time… it loses its appeal. Since they hadn’t experienced it for a few months, the water and accessories kept them actively engaged ALL day!
Lots of people use these tables in different ways and with different accessories. I just used what we had on hand. I stuck to water, ice cubes (such a big hit!), cups, pitchers, measuring cups, pipettes and funnels. For an added winter touch I added a drop of blue food coloring to the water and then added our Arctic animal figurines.
Here’s a list I put together with some recommendations for other accessories to use.
I also brought out the water beads. I don’t love to use water beads because they can be a real pain! They can be dangerous if anyone puts things in their mouths; they can also break if they get squished, they bounce and roll like crazy if they hit the ground which drives the cats crazy and they’re hard to dispose of. They can’t go down the drain!
But the kids LOVE them. Essentially they are tiny beads (like 50,000 fit into a small container) and you pour some into a bowl and they slowly grow by soaking up the water. I guess you can dry them out and reuse them but I haven’t tried that. We use them for a few days and then get rid of them. I only had a rainbow assortment, so I sorted them by hand and picked out the turquoise, blue and clear beads for the winter theme. I’m telling you… a pain. 🙂
But it was totally worth it! Eva and Lola were so happy with this sensory table!
It was a great way to start our week. 🙂
