Our Spring Sports.

It’s safe to say that if you’re looking for the Duffy family this spring… we’ll be out on a sports field!

It’s safe to say that if you’re looking for the Duffy family this spring… we’ll be out on a sports field! A few months ago, it was time to choose spring sports and I was hoping all the kids would choose the same sport… they did not! 🙂 So, we have a soccer player, two baseball players, and a lacrosse player. This means that every day (except Friday!) we have a sports practice or game to attend, and sometimes we have two to go to!

SOCCER STAR:

Lola is our soccer star this season! She’s only had one day of soccer so far but says she loves it. In Kindergarten, the hour of soccer each week is split — 30 minutes for practice, 30 minutes for a game. It’s wonderful and I wish all sports had this same hybrid model! It’s also at 10:30am on Saturdays which is the best case scenario. We’ve done sports early morning and later afternoon, and 10:30 is definitely a sweet spot.

She’s on the Blue team (she wasn’t happy about this and wanted the Pink team!), but lucky for us, we already had blue shin guards! And Gramma got her a blue sporty skort for Easter, so it’s almost like it was meant to be. During practice, she jumped right in and played like she knew how to play! It was fun to watch her and she definitely puts her ALL in everything she does.

BASEBALL STARS:

Baseball, baseball, baseball! We recently joined Opening Day for Baseball — we skipped the parade this year. After Lola’s, very, traumatic parade year (the mascot from the Worcester Railers scarred her forever!), we vowed to skip the parade until the kids are much older! But we did join Opening Day for individual and team photos. They had a lot of fun, dressing in their uniforms and running around in the field. (Many dandelions were picked!)

Eva’s had two practices so far and is totally obsessed. She loves everything from the baseball pants (!) to her teammates! She’s a lefty, so she’s always facing the wrong way but she’ll get it soon enough. She has really great coaches who are so kind, and she loves going. She even asked to skip Dance, to get to baseball on time!

Javi is loving baseball, too. This is particularly exciting because after he played in Kindergarten he said he would never play baseball again. So he didn’t play in first grade. But when he found out so many of his friends play baseball, he wanted to give it another try. I’m glad he did because his whole face lights up on the field. It’s exciting to watch.

Since he’s older, and in Double A (not t-ball) he started practicing twice a week a few weeks ago and now he has 2-3 games a week! He loves practicing in the batting cages. In his first game, he hit the ball and made it as far as 3rd base until his team got 3 outs and he had to head back to the dugout. But it was an exciting inning! I can’t wait for him to score a run! The unfortunate part is that the games are 2 hours long… 5:30-7:30PM. It’s… a lot! 🙂

LACROSSE STAR:

Yup, Javi’s doing two sports! I was really pushing for one but this guy… this guy questioned why the girls get to do Dance AND baseball/socccer and felt like he should get to do two things, too. So here we are. 🙂

He doesn’t love lacrosse. I don’t see his face light up the same way it does for baseball, but he says he has fun. It’s more fast-paced than baseball, which originally I thought he preferred but now I don’t think that’s true. He often asks the coach for a water break… 🙂 We’re working with him to have some enthusiasm on the field and to pay attention (so he doesn’t get hurt but also so he can help his teammates.) Lacrosse practice is twice a week, for an hour each day and then he has games every Sunday. The games are exciting to watch — the kids are actually playing a game of lacrosse now and it looks… real.

The funny part is that spring sports sort of just started and it’s already time to sign up for fall sports! Everything goes so fast…
